What Is The Purpose?

Entering the bathroom before going into bed last night, my gaze dropped down to an area on the sink that looked odd. You know how that is, that split-second ‘huh?’ thought before you realize what’s actually going on. Once my momentary perplexity was over, I recognized that the distinct and creepy figure of a sizeable and large-legged bug was the ‘odd’ sense of a few moments prior.

On the sunny days of winter I have been in a battle with box elder bugs crawling on the south facing windows and in other areas nearby. Just a few at a time. I swear that after I have hunted them down and vanquished them via the suction from the long hose of the vacuum and put the machine away, they come back out from where ever they were hiding and mockingly begin to crawl all over the windows again.

The bug on the sink was not a box elder bug. It was much bigger. It was not moving. Resting, perhaps? The picture shows it next to a quarter that I, with great trepidation, pushed as close as I dare to the insect. It was as big as the quarter. I took a picture and uploaded it to an insect identification app. I kept my distance because that thing looked fierce. 😱

Once I had the insect identified, the call went out to my in-house insect slayer to dispose of it. My only request to him was that he not crunch it until I was out of the room.

It is a Western Conifer Seed Bug. Why is it in my house? What is the purpose of it loitering on my bathroom sink? Why do bugs feel the need to come into my house in the first place? Seems like as soon as they’re in, they look for a way out. Dimwits.

If you’re interested in knowing more about this insect (it’s not a stink bug), here’s the link to the article on Wikipedia.
